AI citations from Google's top 10 fell from 76% to 38% in a year. Your ranking survived. Your click did not.
Search now runs as two separate games. Traditional SEO wins rankings, and a new discipline wins citations inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
This issue shows you both games, the platforms already monetising the shift, and the one book that maps the playbook.
THE CLICK MOVED INTO THE ANSWER
Start with the number everyone gets wrong. Google organic traffic fell just 2.5% year on year across the top 40,000 US websites, and total search behaviour is up 26% since ChatGPT launched (Graphite x Similarweb). Search did not shrink. It moved.
Where it moved is the problem. Organic click-through drops over 60% when an AI Overview appears above your listing. Informational traffic to content sites is down 15 to 30%. 52% of US adults now use large language models, and they ask full questions instead of typing keywords.
Here is the stat that changes your job. A year ago, 76% of the sources cited in AI answers came from Google's top 10 results. That figure now sits at 38%. Ranking on page one no longer guarantees the AI mentions you. The two games have separated.
The new game has rules, and they are tested. Princeton's Generative Engine Optimisation research measured what makes AI systems cite a page. Adding statistics, quoting named experts, and using structured data lifted visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Keyword density did almost nothing. The AI rewards evidence, not repetition.
What stays the same: transactional and branded queries still run through classic search, so your existing SEO still earns its budget. What changes: every informational query your buyers ask now has a second battlefield, and most of your competitors have not turned up to it yet.
META NOW LABELS YOUR AI ADS
While search splits, the platforms are labeling. Facebook and Instagram now flag ads created or significantly edited with generative AI. The disclosure sits in the About this ad panel, visible to anyone who clicks (MarketingProfs AI Update, 10 July 2026).
Two mechanics matter for your workflow. First, Meta auto-labels anything built with its own AI tools, so Advantage+ creative carries the flag by default. Second, Meta reads C2PA content credentials, the metadata standard that tools like Photoshop and DALL-E attach to exported files. Your AI use travels with the file, even when the creative was produced entirely off-platform.
The takeaway is simple. Assume disclosure. Brief your designers on which tools stamp metadata, decide what you are comfortable declaring, and never build a campaign that depends on the AI work staying invisible. Regulators are moving in the same direction, which brings us to the money.
ADS AND AGENTS MOVE INTO THE CHAT
The third shift explains why the first two matter commercially. ChatGPT now runs product feed campaigns that work like Google Shopping or Performance Max. You connect your product catalogue, the system generates the creative, and ads appear below the answer, labelled sponsored. Salesforce made its Shopper, Buyer, and Merchant agents generally available with native ChatGPT integration this month, and Google is bringing ads to AI Mode and the Gemini app.
The scale is already commercial. ChatGPT has 900 million weekly users, and OpenAI reports that about 20% of conversations carry shopping intent. 53% of US consumers now research products with AI tools, and 28% do it daily (Pacvue).
The performance data should move your budget conversation. AI-driven traffic to US retail sites grew 393% year on year in Q1 2026, and in March that traffic converted 42% better than non AI traffic (Adobe Analytics). AI influenced 20% of global online sales across the 2025 holiday season, worth 262 billion dollars, and retailers running their own shopper agents grew sales 59% faster than those without (Salesforce).
Read those three numbers together. The traffic is growing, it converts better, and the platforms have just switched on the ad inventory. Your product feed and structured data are no longer back-office hygiene. They are the new media plan.
BOOK OF THE WEEK
The AI Marketing Canvas, Second Edition by Rajkumar Venkatesan and Jim Lecinski. Stanford Business Books, January 2026, 282 pages.
Paperback ISBN 9781503644335. Ebook ISBN 9781503645851. Search either number on eBay.co.uk or Amazon.co.uk to find the exact edition.
Venkatesan teaches marketing at the Darden School of Business. Lecinski spent over a decade at Google before joining Kellogg. The second edition updates their five-step framework with new chapters on generative AI, agentic AI, and Generative Engine Optimisation, which maps directly to every story above. If you brief agencies or defend budgets, this gives you the language.
WHAT THIS MEANS HERE
EU AI Act transparency obligations under Article 50 apply from 2 August 2026, thirteen days from now. Chatbots must identify themselves as machines, and AI-generated content must be disclosed, with penalties up to 15 million euros or 3% of worldwide turnover. Irish and UK brands selling into the EU are in scope regardless of where the company sits. Meta's labelling is a preview of the disclosure standard the whole market moves to next month. Build your labelling workflow once, and it covers both.
YOUR ACTION THIS WEEK
Run one test. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini about your product category and your brand. If a competitor appears and you do not, you have found your gap. Then fix three things.
Add statistics and named expert quotes to your highest value pages.
Add structured data so machines can parse what you sell.
Get your product feed clean, complete, and agent-ready.
Save this for your next campaign brief.
