Undergraduate
The full base
Three to four years
- A BSc in AI, computer science with machine learning, or data science.
- You build the maths, the programming, and the ML foundations from the ground up.
- Best if you are starting out and want the complete grounding.
Postgraduate
The fast specialisation
One taught year for most MSc programmes
- An MSc in AI or machine learning in the UK or Ireland.
- The quickest route if you already hold a degree. Conversion courses accept non computing backgrounds.
- You enter the market inside a year with a named ML qualification.
Doctorate
The research frontier
Four years
- A PhD in AI, often inside a funded doctoral training centre.
- UK: UKRI AI Centres for Doctoral Training fund the full cost, with tax free stipends near £31,000 in 2026 to 2027.
- Ireland: Research Ireland funds scholarships, and the new Rinn AI network adds hundreds of PhD places.

Why the UK and Ireland
Two governments are funding this on purpose.
State money, multinational hiring, and new compute all point the same way.
Ireland
- €460 million into seven national research centres. Rinn AI takes the largest share at €121.7 million and opens in July 2026, co led by Trinity, UCD, DCU, UCC, and the University of Galway.
- The State plans to train 40,000 people in AI skills over five years. It reached 30,000 in year one.
- Dublin hosts the EMEA headquarters of Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Stripe. OpenAI and Anthropic run operations here too.
- Research Ireland backs a €4.55 billion research plan and a national supercomputer, CASPIr, from 2027.
United Kingdom
- The AI Opportunities Action Plan created AI Growth Zones and named data centres Critical National Infrastructure.
- A Sovereign AI Unit is backed by up to £500 million to build domestic AI companies.
- UKRI AI Centres for Doctoral Training put £117 million into around 900 PhD places, funded at full cost.
- The UK holds the largest pool of AI professionals in Europe, with tens of thousands more needed by 2030.

Funding
UK: UKRI studentships and AI Centres for Doctoral Training. Ireland: Research Ireland postgraduate scholarships. Both cover fees and a living stipend for eligible students.
Prepare first
Get comfortable with Python, linear algebra, statistics, and basic machine learning before you start. Free foundational courses cover all four.
Work permits
Ireland lists data scientists and software engineers on the Critical Skills Employment Permit. The UK offers the Skilled Worker route for graduates who secure a role.
