YOUR PRACTICAL GUIDE

The details that matter.

01

Graduate employment: two separate steps

Graduate immigration permission and employment permit thresholds are different things.

Stamp 1G under the Third Level Graduate Programme provides a period to seek graduate work. A subsequent employment permit has its own role, offer and remuneration requirements. There is no automatic conversion.

02

Intra-Company Transfer Permit

For qualifying transfers within a connected international business.

Senior managers, key personnel and trainees have different conditions. Check overseas employment history, the corporate relationship, remuneration and maximum duration. This is a temporary transfer arrangement, not a general Irish job-search route.

03

Contract for Services Permit

For employees of an overseas contractor fulfilling a qualifying Irish contract.

Review the direct service contract, prior employment and remuneration rules. Subcontracting to a third party is excluded. Permission is connected to the qualifying contract and employment arrangement.

04

Sport & Cultural Permit

For employment requiring relevant sporting or cultural expertise.

Qualifications, skills, experience and governing-body input can matter. Full-time and seasonal arrangements differ; minimum wage or higher applicable pay requirements must be met.

05

Atypical Working Scheme

A separate ISD scheme for specified work outside the usual permit arrangements.

Generally used for specialised short-term work, with distinct exceptions for specified medical, nursing and internship categories. Obtain scheme approval before a visa application where required. Do not treat it as a general short-term work exemption.

06

Reactivation Employment Permit

A specific route for certain former permit holders who fell out of the system.

It may address circumstances outside the worker’s control or mistreatment. An ISD permission and Reactivation letter precede the permit application. It is not a general route for visitors or students who have never held a permit.

07

Dependant & partner permit guidance

Distinguish an eligible dependant permit from a spouse or partner’s immigration work rights.

Certain recognised dependants of CSEP holders or researchers may use the dependant route. Spouses and partners with qualifying ISD permission may instead work without a separate employment permit. Check the basis of the individual permission.

08

Internship Employment Permit

For qualifying students enrolled at degree level or above outside Ireland.

The internship must meet the official course and Critical Skills occupation requirements. The route is limited to 12 months and is not renewable. It is separate from the graduate Stamp 1G scheme.

09

Exchange Agreement Permit

For work under a specified reciprocal or international agreement.

The agreement determines the applicable conditions and duration. Check that the programme is covered before relying on this route; individual exchange arrangements have distinct limits.
